The Portal contains a wide variety of games, environmental control tools, and accessible apps (see image below) that AAC users may want to utilize. If the user had to leave their vocabulary file and navigate through the Portal to find the pageset that they would like to use (i.e. YouTube (simple)," that process would require a significant amount of navigation for the user.
"Linking a button to different pageset" is a programming tool that allows a button within the user's vocabulary file to directly open a different pageset in the Portal.
This article will cover how to link a button from a user's vocabulary file to a different pageset, and then how to link a button from that pageset back to the vocabulary file.
Linking a Button in the Vocabulary File to a Different Pageset
- Navigate to the page in the vocabulary file where you would like to add a button that will link to a different pageset. In this example, we will be adding a button to one of the pages in CoreWord 20 that has a several empty buttons.
-
Select "Menu" in the upper left corner of the screen and select "Edit" from the dropdown menu.
-
You are now in "edit mode" and your screen should look like this:
-
Select the button you would like to link to another pageset. This will open the "Edit Menu" on the right side of the screen.
-
In the "Edit Menu," select "Add Action."
-
In the "Available Actions" menu, select "Go to..."
- Select "Different pageset," and then select "OK."
-
You can then choose the pageset you would like the button to link to from the list of drop-down of options (in this example we selected "YouTube (simple)." Then click "OK."
-
The button you selected is now programmed with the "Go to..." action. You can confirm by referring to the "Actions" section of the "Edit Menu."
-
You can customize the image on the button, the label, and the style by using these tools in the "Edit Menu" on the right side of the screen.
-
In the "Edit Menu" under "Properties," ensure that the button is "visible" and "selectable." This will allow the user to see and select the button when "Edit Mode" is closed.
-
Select "Page" at the top of the "Edit Menu," and then select the "cog wheel."
-
The "Page Settings Menu" will appear. Make note of the page number where you added the button. In this case, the number is 24. This will come in handy in the next section!
- Press "Cancel" in the lower right corner to exit this menu.
-
Press the green checkmark button in the lower right corner of the edit menu.
-
Press the floppy disk save button in the upper left corner of the screen to save your changes.
-
The button you created should now be visible within the vocabulary file. Click on the button to test it!
Linking a Button in the Linked Pageset Back to a Vocabulary File
-
After selecting your programmed button in step 17 in the previous section, you should now be in the pageset that you linked to that button. In this example, we are in the "YouTube (simple)" pageset.
- We need to ensure that there is a button within this pageset that links the user back to their vocabulary file. The steps for programming this action are nearly identical to the steps listed in the previous section.
- First, navigate to the page in the vocabulary file where you would like to add a button to link the user back to their vocabulary file. In this example, we will use the "Home" button in the upper left corner of the page.
-
Select "Menu" in the upper left corner of the screen and select "Edit" from the dropdown menu.
-
You are now in "Edit Mode" and your screen should look like this:
-
Select the button you would like to link to another pageset. In this example, we selected the "Home" button in the upper left corner of the screen. This will open the "Edit Menu" on the right side of the screen.
-
If there are no actions programmed, select "Add Action" (as in the previous section). If there are actions already programmed, you may be able to edit an existing action (as in this example). In this case, select the small pencil next to the existing "Go to..." action.
- Select "Different pageset," and then select "OK."
-
You can then choose the pageset you would like the button to link to from the list of drop-down of options (in this example we selected "CoreWord 20." Then click "OK."
-
If you would like this button to go back to the same page in the vocabulary file where the linked button was programmed, enter the page number into the box (see step 13 in previous section). In this case, the original linked button was programmed on page 24 of CoreWord 20, so we will enter the number 24. Then press "OK."
-
The button you selected is now programmed with the "Go to..." action. You can confirm that by referring to the "Actions" section of the "Edit Menu."
-
You can customize the image on the button, the label, and the style by using these tools in the "Edit Menu" on the right side of the screen.
-
In the "Edit Menu" under "Properties," ensure that the button is "visible" and "selectable." This will allow the user to see and select the button when "Edit Mode" is closed.
-
Press the green checkmark button in the lower right corner of the edit menu.
-
Press the floppy disk save button in the upper left corner of the screen to save your changes.
-
Click on the button to test it!
-
If correctly programmed, it should take you back to the original vocabulary file to the page that you specified.
