Just like a computer, ensuring that the Windows, communication, and eye gaze software on your WinSlate is up to date is critical to its overall functioning. This article provides information regarding how to check for these updates.
Note: The NXT is the camera is currently used on our WinSlate with Enable Eyes devices. If your camera has a label that says "alea technologies," the NXT is the camera on your device. If you have an older WinSlate with Enable Eyes, you may have the Hiru camera. If your camera has a label that says "Irisbond," you have our older camera model. To keep your WinSlate (no eye gaze) performing at its best, two key components must be regularly updated:
- Windows (Operating software)
- Mind Express 5 (Communication software)
- Enable Eyes NXT (Eye gaze camera software)
Please note: You must be connected to wi-fi to run these updates.
Windows Updates
To check for/complete updates:

Click the "Windows" icon at the bottom of the screen
Please note: If you have Mind Express open and you are in "full screen" mode, you will need to exit full screen to see the toolbar containing the Windows icon.
- Select the "Settings" icon

On the menu that appears, select "Windows Update" from the list on the left side of the screen.

Select "Check for updates.

If no updates are available, you will see a "You're up to date message" (as in the image in Step 4). If updates are available, you will see this image at the top of the screen:
- The available updates will be listed and should begin downloading automatically. If this does not happen automatically, you can click the "Install" button visible next to each update.
- Once the available update(s) have downloaded, you may be asked to restart your device for the updates to take effect.
Please note: Windows typically releases two large updates each year (spring and fall). For example: Windows 10 Version 21H2. Always install these when notified to ensure device functionality. If you have not updated Windows in some time, the update process could take some time to complete.
To confirm updates are complete:
- Return to Settings > Windows Update

Look for the green checkmark indicating that your device is up to date.
Mind Express 5 Updates
To check for/complete updates:

Close Mind Express 5 by selecting the "X" in the upper right corner of the screen
Please note: If you have Mind Express open and you are in "full screen" mode, you will need to exit full screen to see the toolbar containing the Windows icon.
- You will see a shortcut on your desktop that is labeled "Mind Express 5 Update." Select this icon to open it.

When prompted, allow the UpdateWizard to make changes (select Yes).
- Once the available update(s) have downloaded, you may be asked to restart your device for the updates to take effect.
To confirm updates are complete:
- Open Mind Express
- Select "Menu" from the upper left corner, and select "Settings" from the dropdown
- Select "System" from the menu that appears.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the icon next to "Search for updates."
- If there are no updates available, you will see a message that says Mind Express is update to date. If there are updates available, proceed through the instructions listed above.
Enable Eyes (NXT) Updates
To check for/complete updates:

If Mind Express is open, close it by clicking the “X” in the upper-right corner of the screen
or by using a pre-programmed button in your vocabulary file (if applicable).
Please note: If you have Mind Express open and you are in "full screen" mode, you will need to exit full screen to be able to exit Mind Express in this way.
- The Intelligaze Toolbar should appear automatically, but if it does not, select the "Enable Eyes" icon on your desktop to open it.
- On the Intelligaze Toolbar, select "Options"

On the menu that appears, select "System."
- If no update is available, the "Update" button will be greyed out, and you’ll see “Up-to-date.” If an update is available, the "Update" button will be clickable, and you will see "Update available" written next to "Status." Select the "Update" button to begin the update process.

A box labeled "Release Notes" will appear. Select the "Download and install" button at the bottom of this box. The download will begin.
- Follow the prompts on the screen as the install progresses.
- Once the available update(s) have downloaded, you may be asked to restart Intelligaze and/or your device for the updates to take effect.
To confirm updates are complete:
- Return to Intelligaze toolbar > Options > System
- Verify that the "Update" button is greyed out, and that the status message says "Up-to-date."
- You can toggle "Automatically check for updates" (lower right side of the menu) to "on" to have Intelligaze check for updates on its own (but this is optional).
