When AAC Users are utilizing eye gaze to navigate their communication system, they need a way to make "clicks" on the screen. Often, "Dwell Control" is used for this purpose.
When an AAC User utilizes "Dwell Control," if they hold the cursor steady over an icon for a set amount of time, that icon will be selected automatically. "Dwell Time" refers to the amount of time a user must hold their gaze over a selection on the screen for it to activate. This time can be adjusted as needed.
This article covers how to ensure that "Dwell Control" is turned on, and how to adjust the "Dwell Time" on a ProSlate 13 EE device.
- Open "Settings"
- Tap “Accessibility," and then "Touch."
- Select "Assistive Touch."
-
Scroll down to the bottom of this menu screen. This is where you will find "Dwell Control." Ensure that this setting is toggled to the "on" position.
-
To adjust the "Dwell Time," use the -/+ buttons.
- A longer "Dwell Time" means that the AAC User will need to hold their gaze on an icon for a longer period of time to select it. Conversely, a shorter "Dwell Time" means that the AAC User will need to hold their gaze for a shorter amount of time to make a selection.
-
The AAC User, SLP, and communication partners will work together to ensure that the "Dwell Time" isn't too fast to where the AAC User is making unintentional selections, but not too slow so that the AAC User's efficiency is significant reduced (which can also lead to fatigue).
