How do I unlock my Forbes AAC device?

Our speech-generating devices (SGDs) are configured to meet the guidelines set by Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance providers that allow them to qualify as Durable Medical Equipment (DME). 

If you or your family member would like access to additional features beyond standard SGD use, Forbes AAC offers the option to unlock your device through a "Feature Unlock Key" form and a small fee.

What does "unlocking" mean?

Unlocking your device allows access to expanded functionality, including:

• Internet browsing

• Multimedia apps and tools

• Environmental controls (May require additional hardware)

• Other features outside standard SGD use

Cost and Details

To comply with federal guidelines, additional features are not included in the original purchase and must be unlocked by the AAC User or their parent/guardian. 

Here’s what you need to know:

• Cost: $10.00 (plus applicable tax).  This fee is not covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance.

• Timing: Devices must be delivered before a device can be unlocked.

• Authorization: A signed "Feature Unlock Key Request" form (see link provided below)

Support and Warranty

Unlocking your device does not void the device warranty.  That said, there are a couple items you should be aware of:

• Our technical support and warranty coverage apply only to the device’s original SGD functions.

• Any issues that arise from use beyond standard SGD functionality—including third-party apps, viruses, or hardware conflicts—are not covered under the support plan.

How to Unlock your Device

1. To request a "Feature Unlock Key," complete this form:  Feature Unlock Key Request

2. Once you have completed the form, call our technical support team at 419.589.7688 option 2 between 8am and 5pm EST Monday through Friday.  They will...

   1. Walk you through paying the required fee ($10).

   2. Assist you with unlocking the device.
